What is Integrated Grid Technologies (IGT)

Brightfield Virtual recognises the fact that interactive simulations of virtual worlds are destined become tomorrows internet, giving users the ability to enjoy a much richer, interactive and more varied on-line experience than that afforded by the internet of today.

Brightfield Virtual’s current research and development into virtual worlds is of paramount importance, to such a degree that we’ve coined the term Interactive Grid Technologies (IGT) to highlight what we consider to be its most important aspects.

Interactivity is self-explanatory, Grid refers to the fact that individual virtual simulations may be connected together to form a much larger world. Technologies reflects the fact that it incorporates a number of interrelated aspects of technology, including high speed broadband, server clustering, low cost/high specification computer hardware, affordable software, plus the increased public interest in social networking.

The OpenSim project is crucial to Brighfield Virtuals IGT development & research, as the open source server code supports multiple independent regions connecting to a single centralized grid. This is somewhat similar to the web, where anyone can run their own web server, tied together through the internet. It can also be used to create a private grid, analogous to a private intranet.

Why is Brightfield Virtual so interested in IGT & OpenSim

Such virtual simulators have incredible potential for all kinds of commercial, educational and other types of businesses and organisations. This becomes even more intriguing given the fact that at some future stage, users of virtual simulators may be able to log into one grid (such as Linden Labs Secondlife), and then move seamlessly into other grids and simulated environments, while maintaining the appearance of their in-world persona (avatar), in-world money, possessions and other such individual and unique attributes.

IGT Current Status

As Brightfield’s IGT project is still very much in it’s infancy, many features are yet to be implemented, however a great deal of usable functionality is already present. However, it’s expected that in a very short space of time the project will mature – allowing it to offer an affordable and adaptable virtual environment, suitable for use by commerce, education and other similar institutions & organisations.

IGT Future Plans

Brightfield intends to continue researching & developing it’s Interactive Grid Technologies, feeding back and contributing to the OpenSim community, where applicable.

Hello!, let me introduce myself...

Hello, and welcome! I’m Ashira Vella, Chief of Operations and Co-Owner of Brightfield Virtual. We are a young company in this exciting and fast-growing virtual world, and I and thrilled to be a part of it! But before I launch into any deep thoughts on the virtual world or Second Life, let me get the FAQ’s addressed.

Is your company real?

Our company is real. We are a real company legally licensed in the state of North Carolina. However, our office is completely virtual at this time. We are not a role play sim. We are very professional in our business model and work ethic because we feel it is the only way to do business, especially in the virtual world.

Real people, real clients, real business strategy, real hard work. Only our meetings are virtual. Brightfield Virtual executives are dedicated to full-time hours and our team is spread across the United States and Europe meeting regularly several times a week using Voice or Skype, Adobe Acrobat screen share program, and Google calendar and documents. We feel we have assembled a great team, and a great system.

What does your company do?

We assist companies and educational facilities entering the virtual world of Second Life. We build work spaces which can range from a custom designed office space on one of our islands, to multiple island complexes with multi-function facilities. Additionally, we provide continued support services such as event hosting, marketing, avatar makeovers, and orientation.

The process of entering Second Life can be a confusing and time-consuming activity. With Brightfield Virtual, trained personal consultants are available to greet individuals and give a guided and efficient orientation that includes navigation tools, appearance modification, use of chat and voice, profile set-up, and much more. Consultants are at your side to provide assistance and answer questions.  Once oriented, we offer insight into the SL community and culture, give SL etiquette tips, and give advice based on areas of interest in Second Life. Whether for business or education, we can connect your team to the larger community. We also have the ability to provide an application called "Immersive Workspaces" that allows clients to hold meetings, seminars, conventions, classes, and entrepreneurial endeavors in real time, by sharing and storing documents and ideas in a rich immersive experience that facilitates strong team building. It also provides a secure environment for those companies or Universities not wishing to be involved in the greater grid right away, and may have liability issues tied to funding or moral codes.

Why get an avatar makeover?

Upon entry into Second Life, individuals get to choose an avatar from a selection provided. Nothing wrong with these avatars, especially for a quick trip into SL on rare occasions. However, if the purpose for entry into SL is to build working business or educational relationships, then a more personalized look is suggested. The primary reason businesses and educators enter SL is for the human “presence” which is unique to SL, and not found with video or teleconferencing. Brightfield Virtual provides a carefully selected collection of skins, hair, wardrobe, and animations to enhance your avatar’s professional image while minimizing time spent shopping and roaming the greater SL world unassisted. For clients that wish to use the 3D grid for a large group,we can provide previously created avatars that individuals can use by logging in with a password, streamlining the entrance inworld, and bypassing the initial orientation, ready to work and share.

How do I get started?

On the welcome page of our website is a tab “Plan a Project”. This is a great place to start. From there our team will contact you to arrange a time to discuss and customize your plan based on your individual needs. Or you may contact me, Ashira Vella, Amethyst Jetaime, inworld or via e-mail at any time.

Brightfield Virtual is a proud participant in the Second Life Grid Program. An initiative designed to give the business community the tools they need to enter the world of Second Life successfully!
